Brands That Support The Resistance
By now, you've probably heard of the impressively-organized #GrabYourWallet movement and other "buycotts" of brands financially connected to Trump. These efforts have been hugely successful: Ivanka's brand was torpedoed (praise be), and many companies have responded to these "buycotts" with policy changes and official statements.
It's easy to see which brands are doing harm and which brands are not, but which brands are actually doing good? Which brands are leading the resistance, both with their messaging and with their profits? We scoured the internet and found our 5 favorite brands to support!
Who They Are: "Lipslut is fashion, subversion, and a middle finger to the current sociopolitical landscape. By working hard towards solving the issues you care about, Lipslut is ready to help you make a statement."
What They Sell: Bold and beautiful lipsticks inspired by outrage and passion. Among their signature tints are Notorious R.B.G, F*ck Kavanaugh, and F*ck Trump.
Who They Support: With every lipstick purchased comes an opportunity to submit a vote for your favorite charity. Options include the ACLU, Center for Reproductive Rights, Human Rights Campaign, and many more. At the end of their campaigns, they tally the results, and choose the winner of their donations by popular vote.
What We Love: Their F*ck Hollywood is the perfect red. We wear it proudly knowing that 50% of its earnings support anti-sexual assault organizations.
Where to Buy: www.lipslut.com
Who They Are: "A subversive underground movement to counteract the forces of mass production, mindless consumerism, and the patriarchy."
What They Sell: Sustainably-sourced, fair trade luxury cashmere sweaters, all hand-stitched by women in NYC.
Who They Support: Select styles from LF support UndocuNeighbor Defense Fund, RxArt, First Book, Alliance for Quality Education, TIME'S UP Legal Defense Fund, the Museum of Modern Art, Promoting Awareness | Victim Empowerment, or a cause of your choice! If you want to ensure that your purchase includes a charitable contribution, make sure to read the description of the sweater on LF's website.
What We Love: "give a damn" charcoal + ivory sweater sends a message we adore, and $100 of each purchase is donated to a cause of your choice.
Where to Buy: Their NYC store is on 382 Bleecker Street, or you can order online at linguafranca.nyc
Who They Are: This team of dedicated dissenters started Dissent Pins as a tribute to RBG's famous dissent collar, which she iconically wore on November 9, 2016. A desire to support the lawyers fighting for civil liberties across our nation's airports inspired this brand to donate their profits to some truly amazing organizations.
What They Sell: Known for their famous "Dissent Pins" of RBG's dissent collar, they have expanded to include more RBG products as well as "Science is Real", "NRA F-Rating", "Women in Science", "Reproductive Justice", and "Werk Boots" Products.
Who They Support: They donate 50% of profits to organizations you love: The Bronx Freedom Fund, The International Refugee Assistance Project, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Reproductive Health Access Project, SisterSong: Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective, Black Girls Code, DIY Girls, ChickTech, The Attic Youth Center, The Ali Forney Center, Trans Lifelife, States United to Prevent Gun Violence, Community Justice Reform Coalition, and Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
What We Love: While the classic Dissent Pin is an amazing accessory, we love the earrings even more! Wearing a pair of these earrings is one of the best ways to scope out fellow resisters -- anyone who recognizes RBG's iconic collar will compliment as soon as they notice your fabulous accessory.
Who They Are: You may know them as the creators of some cozy fleeces, but did you know how much they emphasize social responsibility and environmental protections? They claim, "At Patagonia, we appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. We aim to use the resources we have—our business, our investments, our voice and our imaginations—to do something about it."
What They Sell: More like, "What don't they sell?" Patagonia sells the best in outdoor apparel. From surfing to skiing, and everything in between, you can bet that Patagonia makes the best product for your favorite outdoor activity.
Who They Support: Patagonia earns its title, "The Activist Company", through their environmental campaigns and grant program. In 2017, they donated 100% of their Black Friday sales to environmental activist organizations, and their 2018 $10 million tax cut went directly to grassroots environmental organizations.
What We Love: While we could rave about their dependable and durable backpacks (and we really could), we're going to instead point to their incredible company culture. Patagonia gives its employees Election Day off, and we were immeasurably inspired to learn that employees can receive two months of paid time off in order to participate in environmental internships. What an incredible example to set...
